Hey, I’m Ben Sullivan. Welcome to Car Wise Guide.
If you’re here because you want a dependable used car and you don’t want to get taken for a ride, you’re in the right place.
I spent much of my career on the other side of the sale, inspecting vehicles before people bought them. I wrote up what was really going on and helped families avoid the kind of “great deal” that turns into a financial gut punch two weeks later.

Why I care
I grew up turning wrenches in my uncle’s garage. It was the kind of place where you learned fast: listen before you talk, fix it right the first time, and never send someone back out on the road with something you wouldn’t put your own family in.
Later, I became an ASE-certified mechanic (A-series) and spent 10+ years doing pre-purchase inspections at an independent shop in the Midwest. That job is part detective work, part technician, part therapist. People would come in excited, sometimes nervous, sometimes stretching their budget because they needed a car for a new job, a new baby, or just to stop borrowing rides.
And too often, they were holding paperwork for a car that looked clean on the surface but had expensive problems hiding underneath. I’ve seen cases where fresh undercoating was used to cover rust. I’ve seen cases where sellers cleared codes right before a showing. I’ve seen cases where the check engine light bulb was pulled. I’ve seen “just needs brakes” turn into a cracked head or a transmission on borrowed time.
The hardest part wasn’t the mechanical stuff. The hardest part was watching how quickly a bad purchase can drain savings and add stress to someone who’s already doing their best. That’s why I started writing: so you can spot the red flags before you sign, not after.
What this site does
Car Wise Guide is built around a simple mission: help everyday buyers get a safe, reliable used car at a fair price, without needing a mechanic in the passenger seat.
When you read my guides, you can expect:
- Plain-English explanations. If I use a technical term, I’ll translate it into what it means for your wallet and your safety.
- Step-by-step inspection help. What to look for in the driveway, on the test drive, and on a lift if you can get one.
- Honest trade-offs. Not every issue is a deal-breaker. Some are cheap fixes. Some are warning shots. I’ll tell you the difference.
- Real-world negotiation advice. How to ask the right questions, how to use inspection findings, and when to walk away.
- Financial pragmatism. I’m not here to shame budgets. I’m here to help you protect yours.

My approach
I don’t believe in scare tactics. I also don’t believe in wishful thinking.
A used car can be a fantastic value, but only if you buy it with your eyes open. My job is to help you slow the process down just enough to make a smart decision. That usually means focusing on a few big-ticket risk areas:
- Safety and structure: accident repairs, frame and rust concerns, airbag readiness, tire and brake condition.
- Powertrain health: engine noises, overheating clues, transmission shift quality, leaks that matter.
- Electronics and warning lights: what’s normal, what’s suspicious, and how problems get hidden.
- Ownership and paperwork: titles, mileage red flags, inconsistent history, and signs of poor maintenance.
If you take nothing else from this site, I hope you take this: you’re allowed to ask questions, you’re allowed to take your time, and you’re allowed to walk away.
One quick note on scope: most of my advice is written for U.S. buyers. Rules around titles, inspections, and disclosures vary by state, so I’ll call out exceptions when they matter.
A bit personal
When I’m not writing or digging into used car market trends, I’m usually messing with my high-mileage 2004 Toyota Tacoma. It’s earned every dent and squeak, and it’s a constant reminder of what I care about most: simple reliability, known history, and repairs that make sense.
Outside of cars, I’m big on early morning hikes with my golden retriever and being the neighbor who ends up scanning check engine lights over a weekend cup of coffee. I don’t mind. I genuinely like helping people feel less intimidated by this stuff.

Start here
If you’re new, start with these. They’ll save you time and help you avoid the biggest mistakes:
- Used Car Inspection Checklist
- Test Drive Checklist
- Pre-Purchase Inspection Guide
- Used Car Negotiation Script
If you’re already deep in the shopping process, look for the checklists and red-flag guides. They’re designed to be pulled up on your phone while you’re standing right next to the car.
And if you ever feel stuck, remember the goal isn’t to find a perfect car. The goal is to find a solid car with honest flaws and a price that leaves you room to keep it running.
If you’ve got a question or want me to cover a specific car or problem, you can reach me through the contact page.
One more thing, because trust matters here: some pages may include affiliate links. If you buy through one, the site may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I don’t take payment to recommend specific cars, and I don’t sugarcoat problems to make a sale.
Thanks for stopping by. I’m glad you’re here, and I’m rooting for you to drive home in something safe, dependable, and bought at a fair price.
